Singing on the River
The Brief
This is an event that we have worked on with Kings College, Cambridge for many years and it’s growth in popularity now attracts upwards of 2000 guests all invited to relax on the lawns west of the Chapel. ‘The Kings Men’ are a world renowned choir, who for many years, like their predecessors have performed from a cluster of punts on the River Cam across to the flower meadow. The event needs to be of a high standard as people expect with the Kings Men, it is also important for equipment positioning and cable management to be planned thouroughly with relative high numbers of attendees.
Our Approach
This event has been taking place for hundreds of years and the goal is to maintain its high standards and to be as discreet as possible, to achieve this we kept the speaker system simple by installing 4 x high powered, point source, high output speakers on the far side of the river raised up at 4m. This minimised the amount of cabinets needed across the site and kept cables and trip hazards to non-pedestrian areas only. It also avoided any speaker delay issues by having all speakers in one one area.
We use high quality DPA D:Fine headset microphones for the choir which deliver amazing sound and exceptional consistency, perfectly suiting the needs of the Kings Men and their techincal team. Each microphone uses specialist windshileds to tackle the blustery conditions that are presented in this type of unconventional environment.
We pre-programme the mixing desk and supply an onsite team for constant monitoring and support of the event.
